OUR LIGHT WILL OUTLAST THEIR FLAGS
A series of three tapestries developed in collaboration with Roland Vázquez.in the textile lab in Tilburg. We used early 20th century postcards, depicting images of people who were shown in ‘Human Zoo’s' in Europe. Interwoven with Dutch Colonial war flags from the VOC , the WIC and the City of Middelburg, the epicenter of the Dutch slave trade. The tapestries are intentionally left 'unfinished' and loose threads will remain on the ends of each work. It stands as a metaphor for unravelling the “colonial gaze”, deconstructing the power of the colonizer.
Audiences are invited to physically help de-constructing and transforming the weavings by pulling the threads. Changing strength into vulnerability. The art of weaving is a profound metaphor for understanding the workings of the universe and our place in it. Through the physical process of weaving, we gain a better understanding of this world and how we as human beings are woven into it. We are bound to our bodies with the fragile threads of Earth.
